I frankly do not trust any sort of comparison studies about education in Asia vs. the West,. having lived in Asia long term. The type of education system prevalent in Asia is simply a complete copping of the Prussian system, which emphasizes memorization and test taking.

As far as tests go, the tests have to be roughly equivalent to be comparable. Were the Asians taking the same tests as the British? Were the Asians tests easier? Harder?

I lived in Tokyo for close to 10 years – I have a lot of bizarre stories to tell about their education system – one is an IQ test administered to an American expat kid whose mother I worked with. Now, in the US, you have the Stanford Binet and the Weschler standardized IQ tests. However, this mother told me that her son was given a Japanese IQ test, which was basically “Name the Fish”. “Name the fish?” I asked. She said “Yes, name the fish. You have to tell the difference between a salmon, a mackerel, a tuna, whatever. That’s the Japanese IQ test for a 9 year old.”

The reviews of this book tell a lot more than I can here http://www.amazon.com/Japanese-Higher-Education-As-Myth/dp/0765609258

As for the extra hours Japanese and Chinese spend in school, most of that time is devoted to learning Chinese characters, which are used in both languages. Learning these is very time consuming, as you must know 2000 characters to be functionally literate. Extra time spent in Japanese or Chinese classrooms does not translate to anything other than this.

I loved your comment about most of our politicians being “botched abortions.” I’m going to steal that!!
